BRSR — Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report

BRSR is SEBI's ESG disclosure for the Top 1,000 listed entities, prescribed under LODR Reg 34(2)(f). Filed alongside the Annual Report on BSE/NSE.

Definition

BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report) is an ESG disclosure prescribed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for the Top 1,000 listed entities by market capitalisation. It is filed annually alongside the Annual Report on the stock exchanges (BSE / NSE) under SEBI LODR Regulation 34(2)(f).

The BRSR format was introduced via the SEBI Circular dated 10 May 2021 and applies from FY 2022–23 onwards as a mandatory disclosure (it was voluntary in FY 2021–22).

Structure

BRSR is organised into three sections:

  • Section A — General disclosures covering entity information, products and services, operations, employees, holding / subsidiary / associate companies, CSR, transparency and disclosures, and grievance redressal mechanism
  • Section B — Management and Process Disclosures covering policies and management processes for each of the nine NGRBC Principles
  • Section C — Principle-wise Performance disclosures covering Essential indicators (mandatory) and Leadership indicators (voluntary) under each of the nine NGRBC Principles

Filing format

BRSR is filed both in the PDF Annual Report and in XBRL format on the stock exchanges. The XBRL utility is published by BSE and NSE; see XBRL Taxonomy for BRSR for the taxonomy structure and filing mechanics.

  • BRSR Core — the assured subset of BRSR
  • NGRBC — the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct that underpin the 9 principles
  • Materiality — the framework used to determine which BRSR topics are most relevant for a specific entity
